Musings on God’s Word
As each week goes by I wonder what devotional subject I can speak about? This week worldly affairs has become an issue so, here goes.
Something is happening in our Christian circles that has begun to trouble me.
There is a verse in Colossians that has me wondering about the earthly things that are having the potential to divide Christians within the churches, assemblies, gatherings they are part of.
Colossians 3: 2
- Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Proverbs 3: 5-6
- Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;
- In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
I’m beginning to wonder if as Christians we are spending too much time getting involved, taking positions or letting the things of the world upset us or detract us from the things of the Lord.
In the verses from Proverbs, quoted, it tells us not to depend on our own understanding. In Colossians we should set our minds on spiritual things not on earthly things.
I recall in my early days as a Christian in the churches we attended there were occasions of division in those congregations but usually over scripture interpretations or something else but usually involving our Christianity. I worry about the misuse of Christian principles by politicians to try and persuade people to vote for them rather than looking at the character and integrity of the individual asking for our vote. As well, there are differences of opinion over such things as health issues, climate issues and numberless other earthly matters.
Romans 12:2
- And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
As time goes by and my life nears its end I feel more and more, as a Christian, I need to concentrate on the things of the Lord and spend my time ensuring my Christianity reflects God’s vision for me and not what the world would have people do.
Yes I could concern myself over the wars, famines, tornadoes, politics and other worldly problems, but is my concern or worry going to change anything.
The only change I can work on is sharing God’s message of Salvation and Love for everyone. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for the sins of the world is the only real issue, therefore I would like to leave you with the words from
Titus 2: 11-15
- For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,
- teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
- looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ,
- who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
- Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.
Let’s not get all tied up in the things of the world. Love one another, pray for one another and above all give God the praise and honour He so deserves.
God’s richest blessing on you all
