Musings on God’s Word
As so often happens to me, songs and hymns jump into my head for a variety of reasons.
I think, after our Keenagers and Kathryn Swan’s getting us to sing some children’s choruses, others came to mind.
One that spoke volumes to me goes like this.
Read Your Bible, Pray Every Day
Read your Bible, pray every day, pray every day, pray every day
Read your Bible, pray every day, and you’ll grow, grow, grow.
And you’ll grow, grow, grow and you’ll grow, grow, grow.
Read your Bible, pray every day and you’ll grow, grow, grow.
The truth’s simple and when you consider the children this chorus was aimed at it begs the question? Isn’t this a song for all Christians?
2 Timothy 3:16 & 17
- All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
- that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Here we see clearly the need for prayer and bible reading. There is profit in the understanding of doctrine, for correction and instruction. This scripture outlines our need for learning the doctrine of salvation, to correct behaviors and understand the righteousness we have obtained through salvation.
1 Timothy 4: 13
- Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Couldn’t be much plainer. We are urged even directed to read the scriptures and pray on a daily basis. If you think about growth, as we commonly think about it, it is the necessity of life. We watch our children grow and we pray that their growth is strong, steady and healthy.
A gardener plants his garden and looks forward to seeing the growth of the flowers, vegetables and other plants. Sadly without growth the opposite usually occurs. People and things wither and die. Therefore, we must grow or perish. Or at the very least we stagnate.
Lastly, our personal well being is dependent on our growth.
Philippians 4: 6 & 7
- Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
- and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding , will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 2 :1 & 2
- Therefore, laying aside all malice, all guile, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,
- as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
Here we see our growth as Christians give us the strength and desire to avoid the pitfalls of our human nature and the sins Satan would love to trip us up with. The more time spent in reading scripture and in prayer keeps our minds and bodies stayed in Christ and our Christian strength and walk on an upward trajectory.
The children’s chorus. “Read your Bible, Pray every day.” is the simple truth by which we should live our lives as Christians.
I pray that we each make every effort to follow those simple directions.
