Psalm 107:1
- O, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endureth forever.
Sunday nights Hymn Sing. What a joyous occasion. We had 58 or more folks from many congregations in the valley, enjoying favorite hymns, listening to a song off of Youtube called “Whispers in the Night” by Roger Bennett with the Legacy 5 quartet. A trio of Jayne Minor, her Sister Elaine and Jack sang “O Glorious Love” by John Peterson. What a glorious night of singing and praising the Lord.
I would invite any and all to come and join us again on Nov. 10th for another Hymn Sing. Jayne Minor on Piano and Nigel Robertson on keyboard and organ. Possibly Keith back on the organ.
This is an event not to be missed followed by fellowship and refreshments.
How much does the Bible encourage us to spend time singing and making melodies?
Colossians 3:16
- Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
As I read this I believe we are taught through scripture but also through the hymns written by men and women led by God. The message of Salvation and its result are clearly stated in the many hymns we sing. Thousands of them over the years. Fanny Crosby over 120 years ago wrote over 8000 hymns of which only a few are sung these days. Oh that men would praise the Heavenly Father in word and song.
Acts 16 is the story of Paul and Silas’s being beaten with rods and thrown in prison. What did they do? Verse 25 says
- “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God. This resulted in the ‘keeper of the prison’ and his family being saved.
The message of Salvation is clear and concise through most hymns.
The book of Psalms contains many verses of encouragement to praise the Lord. Here are a few.
Psalm 9:2
- I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
Isaiah 12:5 says
- “Sing to the Lord, For He has done excellent things;…………….”
Psalm 100:1-3
- Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
- Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.
- Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Psalm 13:5 & 6
- But I have trusted in Your mercy; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
- I will sing to the Lord because He has dealt bountifully with me.
Finally in Psalm 95: 1-3
- “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our Salvation.2) Let us come before His presence with Thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. 3) For the Lord is the great God, and the great King above all gods.”
Many reasons to praise and sing praises to our Lord and Savior. In the good times and in the bad, in health and in sickness. Our praise should be to the one who saved us and blessed us in so many ways.
So many reasons to raise our voices in song.
