Musings on God’s Word

Insurance. This week has been an interesting exercise in renewing the insurance for our Condo unit. We buy insurance for many things. Car, Life, Home etc. Insurance rates are increasing and coverage is decreasing, just like everything else we need or want. So, why do we buy all these insurances? So we can take care of replacement. Things that we need to live. Which of course includes life insurance. LIfe insurance to provide for loved ones who will live on.

As I pondered this situation I realized there is one insurance policy that is obtainable as a free gift. What is that insurance? It comes free for the taking with no strings attached. Of course, it’s Salvation! Available to anyone who accepts God’s offer. The cost of this insurance was paid for by our Saviour’s death on the Cross and guaranteed by His resurrection from the dead. This insurance (Salvation) does not run out and is always paid in full. All of what we buy insurance for, is mostly “stuff” or buildings or vehicles but our Savior provides full coverage at no cost to us. This Salvation does come with responsibilities though. We owe God everything. We have a duty to live for Christ and and obligation to share the message of Salvation to everyone we know.

I do know, however, that even in scripture we are encouraged to provide for our loved ones.

1 Timothy 5:8

  1. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

The law requires us to insure our vehicles and it would be foolish not to insure our homes and to purchase life insurance to provide for our family.

We also want to have spiritual insurance which is protection against loss of eternal happiness. So by our desire and need to be “Saved” we are ensuring or insuring our future with Christ. So for whatever earthly insurance we have, how much more important is the heavenly insurance we need. By Jesus’ death and resurrection for our Salvation we have the assurance that God is in charge in our lives. No matter what happens God is still in control. We can do no less than obey God’s commands and listen for his still small voice. And finally putting all our trust in Him throughout our lives.

Hebrews 6: 17-19

  1. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath,
  2. that by two immutable things, in which is is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
  3. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil.

(immutable: unchanging over time or unable to be changed  “an immutable fact”)

Insurance yes when absolutely necessary. Assurance always as the anchor of life and hope of Heaven. Salvation first, insurance if necessary.

I think the following hymn says it well.

Will Your Anchor Hold In The Storms Of Life
1Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?
 We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
  Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.
2It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,
For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;
And the cables passed from His heart to mine,
Can defy the blast, through strength divine.
3It will firmly hold in the straits of fear,
When the breakers have told the reef is near;
Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.
4It will surely hold in the floods of death,
When the waters cold chill our latest breath;
On the rising tide it can never fail,
While our hopes abide within the veil.
