Musings on God’s Word
An item showed up under news about a power company employee that had accidentally touched a 75000 watt power line and suffered catastrophic injuries. Injuries included loss of one arm and severe damage to his face including the loss of one eye. The fact he survived was a miracle in itself but a testament to the wonder of our bodies created by God. During the man’s recovery an opportunity came about for a facial transplant from a 30 year old male donor during which the doctors decided to also transplant the donor’s eye. So far the operation has had a great amount of success with feeling slowly returning to the transplanted face as well as the brain reacting to light shone into the transplanted eye.
I share this to emphasize the wonders of the human body God created! I even thought of the fact that in my own case my body is 82 years old and continues to function on a daily basis with things like my heart, lungs, and other organs working away 24/7 never taking time off to rest.
So what does scripture say about the wonders of the human body?
Psalm 139:13-16
- For You have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my mother’s womb.
- I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knows right well.
- My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
- Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed; and in your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, when as yet there was none of them.
Our wonderfully made bodies, of course, are not immune to disease and pain and will ultimately see death but while we live and breathe we can only marvel at the wonders of God’s creation. We His people are the best example of God’s power and majesty as part of His creation.
Because of what we know about our fantastic bodies we should also realize that we are not our own. God owns us lock, stock and barrel.
1 Corinthians 6:19
- What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own.
If any one of us builds something we consider it ours, we own it. So to, does the Lord God own each one of us. As creatures of His creation we belong to him. BUT as children of God we often stray and like some human children turn our back on our Father, God. So freedom of choice often leads to wrong choices. But you and I having made a choice to follow Jesus can look forward to eternity with Jesus and the pleasure as outlined in
Philippians 3:21
- Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
As I consider our bodies so wonderfully made I am reminded of the sacrifice of Jesus’ body for our sins and Salvation. We can do nothing less than thank and praise him for his wonderful gift. We can join our voices in thanks and remembrance every Sunday morning as we remember our Lord’s sacrifice by sharing the elements at our Breaking of Bread Service.
