Musings on God’s Word
This week I’d like to talk about friends from a Christian and Biblical perspective. The book of Proverbs speaks about friends and their value so I will share a couple of scriptures and some thoughts on the matter. I’ve never heard anyone wish for fewer friends. As humans we usually appreciate the value of our friendships and would be happy with more not less. However, like family, friends often pass away, move away or just don’t stay in contact any more.
I was sharing with the fellows this morning about an event that occurred yesterday. During my tenure as Mayor of Lake Cowichan we had an exchange relationship with a community in Japan. This has given us many friendships from our visits to Ohtaki, Japan. One of those friendships developed from getting to know a young lady and home staying her, while she developed her skills to become an organizer for the exchange. Barb and I became close friends with her. She showed up this weekend as part of the latest delegation. My former town secretary kept me informed of their arrival and where they would be. They went to the Kinsol Trestle where I showed up to surprise her. As I stood in the middle of the trestle she didn’t notice me until about 20 feet away she realized I was standing there. She immediately broke down in tears and ran to give me a beautiful big hug which lasted for at least a minute. I brought her to our condo for a visit with Barb. Here is a friendship made many years ago, We don’t see each other very often but the solid friendship that was developed has continued to this day. Along with others from this small town in Japan
So what I’m trying to say is we need friends. Friends of all kinds and from all places. As we arrived back from our trip to the Kinsol Trestle, at our condo Barb was conversing with some friends in Portugal that we met in 2003/2004 and still maintain a friendship with.
Genesis 2:18
- It is not good that the man should be alone
So God gave Adam a companion. One of man’s problems is social isolation. We see people so tied to computers, tablets and phones that dealing with live, real human beings becomes a problem.
Proverbs 18:1
- A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment.
Although God is the supreme being above all else, God is a special friend as well as Father, Savior, creator etc.
Exodus 33:11
- So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.
John 15:13-15
- Greater love hath no man that this, that a man lay down his life for his friends
- Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you
- Henceforth I call you not servants……………………………..but I have called you friends
