Scripture

My wife and I have had a wonderful 7 weeks. A cruise to Alaska, a trip to the prairies and a visit from our prairie relatives. A great time on all three events. It got me thinking, as Christians we are prone to be thankful for the good things that happen in our lives but I wonder if some of the “not so good” things we should also be thankful for. God uses everything to teach us and help us in our Christian lives. I’m sure, however, like me, you sometimes wonder about those problems and other issues that come along if it’s really possible to be thankful for these difficulties. Our Bible tells us we should

1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

  1. Rejoice always,
  2. pray without ceasing,
  3. in everything give thanks: For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Our growth as Christians should include; thankfulness, authenticity, acceptance, peace, humility and a genuine care for others. The following hymn, I think, expresses what I’m trying to say.

Thanks to God for my Redeemer, Thanks for all Thou dost provide!
Thanks for times now but a memory, Thanks for Jesus by my side!
Thanks for pleasant, balmy springtime, Thanks for dark and stormy fall!
Thanks for tears by now forgotten, Thanks for peace within my soul!
Thanks for prayers that Thou has answered, Thanks for what Thou dost deny!
Thanks for storms that I have weathered, Thanks for all Thou dost supply!
Thanks for pain, and thanks for pleasure, Thanks for comfort in despair!
Thanks for grace that none can measure, Thanks for love beyond compare!
Thanks for roses by the wayside, Thanks for thorns their stems contain!
Thanks for home and thanks for fireside, Thanks for hope, that sweet refrain!
Thanks for joy and thanks for sorrow, Thanks for heavenly peace with Thee!
Thanks for hope in the tomorrow, Thanks through all eternity!
