Musings on God’s Word

Before I say anything else I want to complement our Sound and Technology team for their great work on producing the Youtube videos for both services and Hymn Sings. I just watched the last Hymn sing video from Sunday Night Oct 15th. What a great job! I particularly appreciate the additional pictures of landscapes overwritten with verses of scripture. Thanks Don for the editing and adding items. You and Al are to be thanked for your care and keeping of the system.

If you have access to Youtube on your computer or TV just search for Brae Road Gospel Chapel and you can find all the videos going back over 6 months. The September hymn Sing video has been seen 167 times. Praise God!

As I thought about a devotional for today I read in our Daily Bread the statement people have made which goes something like this.”God helps those who help themselves” The Daily Bread talked about an individual and his relationship to Jesus but I have to ask the question. Is that comment correct? I don’t believe it is. As I see it we are to be dependent on Jesus our Savior and go to him in prayer and supplication as our lives transpire. Whatever the issue it should not be a case of looking inward to ourselves for the answer but seeking God’s guidance for any answer or direction we need to move forward. I would say “God helps those who depend on Him”.

James 1:5

  1. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach and it will be given to him.

He gives us the gift of free will so that we can make decisions and choose to love Him. Which means we also have to make these earthly decisions which should be made through prayer and asking God for direction.  He doesn’t leave us unequipped, and we can and should ask Him for guidance and wisdom for these choices.

Matthew 7:7

  1. Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Such easy simple ways to deal with issues. Ask, Seek and Knock. We have someone who is ready, willing and able to provide His children with guidance and direction no matter what the issue. Pray without ceasing and following the direction God gives, through the leading of the spirit and reading God’s word. God never fails.

Jeremiah 28:12

  1. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.

Jeremiah’s teaching from God is as applicable today as it was in Jeremiah’s time. We are to stop, look and listen just like the advice before crossing a railway track. Our lives can be so much more enjoyable and peaceful when we “Stop” before making an important decision. “Look” into scripture and be led by the spirit as to where to look. Then “Listen” for God’s still small voice to give us the advice and direction we need to move forward or in some cases to “stand pat” until the answer is made clear. A couple of additional scriptures to follow:

Psalm 32:8

  1. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye.

Advice given to David should be more than good enough for us. We all need instruction and teaching from time to time, and guidance never ever hurts. Particularly from our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 37:23-24

  1. The steps of a good man (woman) are ordered by the Lord and He delights in his way.
  2. Though he (she) falls he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him (her) with His hand.
